The white metal crossed flags were introduced in 1934 for visual signallers of Light Horse regiments and Scottish infantry battalions of the Australian Army.
Oxidised copper crossed flags were worn in the Australian Army between 1914-19, 1922-30, and 1939 onwards. The brass, white metal, and oxidised crossed flags with 5-pointed star were worn in the Australian Army from 1934 by signallers of all Arms, other than Australian Corps of Signals, who had qualified as wireless operators. Anodised crossed flags were worn back in the day on No3 and No 6 Dress (Warm Climate / Tropical Dress) as follows:
Gold Anodised - All Regiments and Corps other than: Silver Anodised - Light Infantry Black Anodised - Rifle Regiments i.e. Royal Green Jackets, Gurkhas JSP768 2001 shows a Blackened Gilding Metal version but I suspect it should be black anodised and anyway is probably obsolete. Tim

There is a Rifles No1 dress bullion badge. It's the same as the RGJ example except it has silver edging rather than gold. I'll post an image later on.

Thanks once again for the help everyone. I'm attaching my collection of flags which suddenly looks small. I particularly like the brass set with the crown in the first photo as the backing plate is madge from a can of tennants - very authentic.
Marc, is that a list you have put together? It will be a great help. Michael |

Thank you both. I wonder if this sensible practice was authorised or not?

I volunteer at the Signals Corps museum in Melbourne at Simpson Barracks at Watsonia. As far as I know we do not have an example of the signals badge with a star above. I will check when Im there tomorrow. Regards Phil. |
