Acronym help

[Another Bubble]

My Mum has started to look into her family tree and is working down her paternal line.

We know he served in the Military Police during the Second World War and she's been researching him and came across two acronyms that she couldn't understand.

I've worked out that CMP stands for Corps of Military Police but AMPE has me stumped.

Any ideas?

Could you tell us in what context the AMPE acronym is being used please as it may help with identification.

AMP is an abbreviation found on WWI medals - Assam Military Police - but of course, no "E" and the wrong war.

I've spoken to my Mum as she's the one with the documents.

AMPE appears in a column marked "Regiment/Corps".

If it is a C & not an E then the C is very curly.

Auxiliary could make sense as it covers the first part of his service, although there is an overlap of a few months between the end date given for AMPE & the start date for CMP.

You're thinking Auxiliary Military Pioneer Company?
Which would date the reference to the end of 1939 - end of 1940.

Yep Leigh I was thinking that if it was Auxiliary Military Pioneer Corps they took literally thousands of recruits at the beginning of the war and maybe he then transferred to the CMP

From the information Mum has, he was in AMPE or C between enlistment in November 1939 to May 1942 & is shown as being in CMP between January 1942 until he was demobbed in September 1945.

As you can see, there is a crossover in dates.

Somewhere in the dim bits of my mind I recall that CMP recruits were enlisted into, and badged as, the General Service Corps until after they finished their basic military police course and were issued their first stripes. This was so they did not get mistaken (and bullied) as CMP personnel whilst not having any powers to deal with matters.

I doubt the AMPC would be used in the same way as the AMPC included conscientious objectors. However, this man may have been recruited a an Auxiliary Pioneer and then transferred to CMP. The date in changeover may be an admin matter i.e. they waited to confirm he had passed his CMP courses before confirming him as moving Corps.

A move from the AMPC to the CMP seems a little unlikely unless the soldier was what I believe were called Refugees from Nazi Persecution, many of whom were, despite having excellent qualifications placed in the AMPC because they were "foreign" citizens.

Some more background on the man might help.

Sorry but I've only just noticed your reply. I'll speak to Mum tomorrow to get full information but his name was Fred Kaye & I think he was born in Kirkburton in, I think, 1899.
