B FAA Catapult Rating or Carpenter
C FAA Quarters although not listed
D As above
E FAA
F Harbour Defence Gunnery
G Torpedo Quarters although not listed
H Aerial Torpedo Fitter
I Torpedo with individual letters W and CP sewn on.

Hi Bryan

There must have been many short lived badges made in the 2WW. Lots of short term specialist guys. We may never get to the bottom of it unless there is someone out there who wore the badge or has a photograph of the badge being worn.

As regards the 1WW, I have seen badges in a 1WW stock book (in a naval museum) that do not appear to have been issued as well as badges which have been issued but no reference made of them, one of the classic cases being the RNMBR.

There is always hope.

John

Default Royal Navy Badges (Funnies)

Hi All

I can add another example to these apparently 'unissued' badges - this time from the First World War. I have a Hydrophone Operators badge consisting of a pair of headphones around the letter 'H'. The Imperial War Museum have confirmed the existence of the badge design but state that it was never issued. However, my badge is attached to an obviously well worn ratings uniform, so at least one was!

If anyone is interested I will put a picture on the site.

Pete

& as we are showing "funnies" here is another.... Medical - Dental Assistant(?)

This one I picked up at a show not all that long ago, I have never seen it in a naval insignia book either, but orriginally I thought it might be RCN (pre 1950)
as the same caduceus logo was used when the RCN "Canadianized" rank & rate/branch structure in 1949-50.

But now I am not so certain of this as the RCN had no dental branch until the integration period in the late 1960's - dental services were provided by the RCADC.

Soooooo, anyone seen this one before - or any other similar Medical rates?

Default Royal Navy Badges (Funnies)

Hi Bryan

I think that your Dental badges may be Royal Australian Navy. See the attached images.

The first badge is for a Dental Hygienist & Mechanic.

The second image is for a Dental Assistant.

Nice to see another Hydrophone Operator's badge! I'll sort out some pictures of mine.

I have seen the Hydrophone Operators badge in a 1WW stock book, so it did exist. Quite a few years ago Steve Bosley asked me about the badge, since he was offered one on uniform, but nothing else came of it. I think Torpedo Armourer is a good suggestion.

OK thanks Pete, that seems to solve the mystery of the Dental rate.

Dental Mechanic - now that one strikes me as weird - do I really want a mechanic working on my teeth? I always thought mechanics were someone who worked on cars & machinery!

Hi RCN

The stock book was in Royal William Yard (A Naval Victualling Yard) Plymouth in the 80s. Since the Yard has now closed, I am informed that it was transferred to the Naval Museum in Devonport Dockyard, where it was sighted by a friend a few years back.

Be nice to acquire a copy of it John, would likely be quite revealing.

Default Royal Navy Badges (Funnies)

Hello Bryan

Here are a few pictures of my red-embroidered Hydrophone Operators badge. Out of interest I have included some extra images of the uniform to which it is attached. The last two pictures show the front fastening of the trousers and the lacing on the rear.

Re the Devonport Dockyard Museum. This has now closed as the Navy is selling off the South Yard where it was located. Many of the items there came from the Victualling Yard when that closed. I have no idea what has happened to the items held by the museum.
