OPINIONS ON THESE 2 OFFICERS BADGES PLEASE
Hi all
Can I ask for opinions on these 2 badges? The Leicestershire looks to be an osd but with silver scrolls. Is this normal? It has a makers mark J&Co. The Irish is just very poor Thanks in advance BC |

the leicestershire could be silver and gilt with dark varnish on,so you could try some paint stripper or thinners to remove it unless someone knows different.

My thoughts exactly. Made by Jennens & Co (who only made officer's badgs) so before 1925 when they were taken over by Gaunt. A nice item.

BC regarding the Irish Guards badge although the method of fixing the device to the star is generally right for the badges issued for the last several years I have not seen a back look this poor. I do think this is a suspicious item.

hi guys
i tried the thiners with no luck. a closer inspection shows what i believe replaced lugs and when they have done this, burnt the hell out of the gilt as you can still see traces i dont suppose the gilt can be restored? bc |

Looks like a very nice badge BC. Probably repaired at some point due one broken attachment. I would leave it just as it is, I really like the patination you have uncovered.
We have discussed gilding before. It would appear that every process involves difficult to handle chemicals. Here in the UK hardly anyone offers gilding as a service because of this. There are a few people who advertise on eBay but I have not used any of them.
