8 KRIH FS Cap
Good day folks
I thought you might be interested to see this ORs 8KRIH FS cap. Dark green material with gold bullion piping. GS buttons which I find slightly surprising. 1930s I believe. No markings inside that I can see except for a 7 1/2 size stamp Regards James |

James,
it is common to see GS buttons on OR's caps, even on the coloured FS caps such as this. The WWII book I have seems to show them wearing a Torrin cap, though that might only be officers or perhaps yours is a different date? The colours appear to be correct, Green with Gold piping.

The piping is golf wire. NCOs version?

Oh! yes. Definitely an NCO's version. Officers didn't wear FS caps. I have investigated Torrin caps (I love this forum as I'd never heard of a Torrin cap but have looked them up now) and I don't think the 8H wore one. I will investigate further with the museum.

Was that picture taken in Bognor Mike ?
Id have thought the tent hat was part of dress regs and would have been worn in certain dress . |

Officially the tent hat was worn with Service dress but it was interchangeable with the SD hat. But as you can see from the attached photos the 8th Hussars and more recently the Irish Hussars and QRH also wore the tent hat in the field.
It is a great design for wearing with headsets! In the western desert, A Squadron in Normandy in 1944 and more recently in Basra. J |

In "The dress distinctions of the VIII King's Royal Irish Hussars as worn at the time of the amalgamation of the Regiment in 1958" published by Langridge's Military Publications, 1959. The author, Bernard Cox, says of the tent hat;
"The "Tent Side hat" or "Tea cosy" worn by the Officers and and the R.S.M. This cap could be, and was, worn in every order of Dress".... " The Gold Bullion tassel formerly worn was discontinued some years ago" Of the F.S.C.; The coloured F.S.Cap was of universal pattern and could be worn by all ranks below R.S.M. In actual fact it was rarely worn within the regiment. The whole was of dark green cloth with the body and flaps edged with gold russia braid. They were two gilding full dome buttons at the front to fasten the flap..." John |
