I think I have collected all the cap badges that have amalgamated to form the Duke of Lancasters Regiment. I would appreciate if anyone can see any badge/Regiment I have missed. Thanks

Hello Tom,

If you are looking to list all the regiments/battalions that can be said to be now represented by the Duke of Lancasters Regiment, I think it is a difficult task.

There was never a Kings ( Manchester ) Regiment and if you are going to include The Kings and Cheshire Regiment ( who wore the badges of The Kings and The Cheshire Regiment and never had their own badge ), you should also perhaps include 5/8 Kings and following from that the 5th Battalion ,Kings Regiment and 8th Battalion,The Manchester Regiment and so on.

I would be interested to see what badges you included so far.

Thanks for your response. Thankyou for pointing out my error of listing the Manchester Regiment as the Kings, my mistake.
I have a Cheshire badge, I just to make sure it is the correct pattern. The other battalions you have listed, do they have their own cap badges, as the 7th Bn Manchester Regiment does?
I have also been unable to find a badge for the Lancastrian and Cumbrian Volunteers.
I am hoping to get the badges mounted this week, as long as my boss doesn't give me work to do!

Like the The King's and Cheshire Regiment, The Lancastrian and Cumbrian Volunteers were a multi-badged regiment with no cap badge of their own.

BTW, the Cheshire element of The King's and Cheshire Regiment went into 4th Battalion, the Mercian Regiment and thus were only just "touching" the King's Regiment > The Duke of Lancasters Regiment, not really part of it in my opinion.

This post has reminded me of a " family tree" I saw at the St.Helens Headquarters of the Lancashire Artillery Volunteers, the person who had compiled it had included most of the Territorial gunner units in the north west including those that had been raised as infantry etc. and on reflection he was right to do so.

As far as your question is concerned regarding unit with their own badges, it rather depends how far back you want to go.

I am unsure as to what time period your display is intended to cover, so my answer may not be relevant, but here is the Manchester Regiment information.

All 6 of the VB's had their own badges.

After 1908 when the VF became the TF only the 7th Bn. had its own different cap badge worn until 1921 when it amalgamated with the 6th Bn.

In 1949 the regiment adopted a WM fleur de lys until 1964 when what was left wore an Anodised Aluminium one.

I would definately include the WM one.

This information relates to other ranks only.

If I remember correctly the Manchester VB badges was the standard badge with a small disc #VB on between the scroll and Crest?
I have a 7th Bn badge but I am putting this in a separate display as I am doing one that shows Bn/Regts that were absorbed into other regiments ie Royal Artillery/RLC etc.
I have never seen a WM fleur de lys only brass which I have. Was the WM for when they were part of RAC?

Tom,

Yes, thats right for the VB's except the 4th VB (which became the 7th TF), they wore a WM floriated F de L.

The WM F de Lys adopted by the regiment after WW2 is not related to any affiliation to the RAC, they remained an Infantry Bn.

They are very common and you will pick one up on ebay.
