I wonder if it has been acid cleaned?

Hi Paddy, I got it from an online jewelry seller, so I would imagine found in a jewelry box from maybe a family member of an RND soldier who maybe emigrated to the states. This one was in Florida.

Yes Phil, I think so, a jewelers cleaner of some sort before the addition of the broach way back, I don't think recently.

I like it and the brooching for me is a positive. Shows it was loved and cherished and worn. Please dont repair you are altering its history.
For £20 its very nice. Regards TRT (NB having a distant relative who served with the Nelson battalion and was KIA in Nov 1916 on the Somme to think it could have been a pal of his who once owned the badge and gave it to a sweetheart just adds to the value of the item as it is.) |

Hi TRT, yes. I think I'll leave it as is, to your point. That's where history took it. The only thing I might do is strip the varnish off it. Also, once I mount it, the pin won't be seen anyway, so really no need to repair.

Good stuff, Simon! (I've been in the Ukraine for the past week where the badge forum is forbidden!) I like the idea of not repairing it too, for reasons noted above. Cheers, Ian.

Hi,
JP: thanx, so is it established to all Hood badges are Gaunt made, have a plaque to the back, and allways have eyelets to the back? What puzzled other collectors, is the fact that this one has a slider and differs from (most?) known copies. Again, i have little knowledge in this matter, just like to get things straight and accept that is a copy. |

Hi All,
Welcome to the Forum eparges, This small version (with slider) is a puzzle to me also. I have two like that and a larger version with lugs (without a Gaunt plaque). Did this battalion wear small collar badges? Cheers, Last edited by Tinto; 29-05-12 at 08:24 PM. Reason: Corrected spelling |

I agree, tis a copy for reasons stated but maily the slider. All should be lugged though there is disagreement about all having Gaunt plaque. Even if we assumed a small badge was worn on collars (which I have never heard of before) it would be lugged not slidered.

Officers of the RND wore collar badges and of course these would have been lugged and also smaller than the cap badge. Have a look at the RND album by Paddy on this Forum. I doubt if one will ever see a finer collection and his collection is still growing!

Here is a genuine one without the Gaunt plaque, but with provenance.

I would not be happy with all of Paddys badges either, that said though he does have some nice ones!

Like you I am not happy with all of my badges. I also have one of the Hood badges shown with a slider and a small Nelson with a slider (not happy with either of these but have included them in my album because they are an oddity at the moment and well made). I also have an unmarked full size Nelson which I am undecided about. It isn't the standard copy and again is well made so I am not getting rid of it yet. The RNDMG badge has been made as a reference from a genuine RND title and genuine MGC cap badge but is by no means a WW1 period piece (but I'll happily swap it for the one you have ). Like some I am not convinced that all should have Gaunt plaques but that is the sort I went for through choice and given the numbers of personnel in the RND there is a good chance that there was more than 1 manufacturer. I do however think that they should all have lugs, not sliders and I also feel that there are good collars out there. I have a Hood collar badge with Gaunt plaque which although plated I am happy that it is genuine. If you feel that any of my other RND badges (particularly shoulder titles) are a bit suspect then please let me know either via this post or PM as I am always happy to listen to other constructive opinions. I have updated some of the descriptions in my RND album to avoid any confusion. And finally to answer eparges's initial question, unfortunately I do not think your badge is genuine for the reason given above. Paddy |
