This is Downside OTC just before WW1. The brass shield cap badges are clear. This is the badge in use in 1938. http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ictureid=70689 according to EJ Martin's records of that year.

The Kings Crown gun-metal brass badge post dates the OTC and is used by the CCF.

[QUOTE=manchesters;266380]This may fit in your work Alan, re Hulme Grammar School OTC. When badges to this OTC turn up they are usually described as Hulme Grammar School, Oldham. That is NOT true. They belong to Hulme Grammar School, Manchester, a different school, but founded by the same person William Hulme. I have been in correspondance with Hulme Grammar School, Oldham and they didnt have an OTC. They did have a CCF which first began on 11.2.1941 as 601 (The Hulme Grammar School Oldham) Squadron, ATC.
On 1.9.1948 O.H.G.S. CCF replaced this unit and it was affiliated to the local T.A. Battalion, the 41st Royal Tank Regiment (T.A.), which was formally the 10th Bn. The Manchester Regiment prior to WW2. The Cadets wore the black beret and RTR cap badge.

https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=...0corps&f=false

As I like to evidence things, page 13 in this book confirms that Hulme Manchester had the OTC for senior boys and a cadet Corps for younger boys.

Default K&K 2661 Royal Wantage School.

There is a typo here as it should read Royal Wanstead School CCF.

The Wanstead Infant Orphan Asylum changed its name to Royal Wanstead School in 1938. RWS did have a Cadet Corps but no OTC. Royal Wanstead School CCF did not survive into the 1970s as the charity, that ran the school, closed all of its schools in 1971.

This cadet force was not an OTC and does not appear in any records that I can find prior to the 1960's.

It appears that it is a CCF badge. The school CCF wears the Rifles badge retaining the link with their county regtl link to the KSLI.

Alan,

These extracts from the Archer Parfitt article might be of interest.

Peter

Thanks. I was waiting for a response from the school CCF as to when they were founded but you have answered it for me as 1955.

The CCF does not seem to have ever been an OTC. The school now wears RANGLIAN badges. As far as I can ascertain the badge shown is CCF rather than OTC.

pre WW1 the school cadet corps were in slouch hats but the officers seem to have dragons on their caps.
The cadets seem to have a sphinx collar? on the side of the slouch.

In this one the cadets are again in slouch but the officer may well have a round badge of the SWB?

By 1917 the blue tunics and slouch hats have been replaced by khaki tunic and caps. !00% certain that they are wearing brass Monmouth dragons.

By the 1940s & 50s it appears that the Welch badge was in use.

To summarise we have photos of the Monmouth Regt's Dragon in use in WW1 as a cadet corps, the Welch Regt badge in the 1940s and then the 2nd Monmouths in use in the 1970s. One noticeable absence is the 'Serve and Obey' badge shown in K&K. It is a Haberdashers badge rather than Monmouth but is recorded by EJ Martin's work in 1938.

K&K incorrectly list this as an OTC. It was a Cadet Corps wearing its school badge design until its closure in 1931.

A CCF was founded post WW2 but it wore the GS Cap badge. This badge is shown on the school website and has been confirmed by an old-boy of the CCF from the 1950s.

The CCF was wearing the RASC badge by 1958 (local unit was Bicester) and was later affiliated to the RAOC when that was formed.

Default Wilsons School KK2173

http://www.mycommissionbid.com/bid/viewitem.php?id=4

This shows a mirror image of Wilsons school. The cap badge has a scroll but K&K also show this version. It is this version that was recorded in use in 1938.

I have had my doubts about this and the fact that they face both ways suggests a collar badge to me.

The CCF adopted the scrolless badge in brass. They changed to the Queens Regt in the 1970s and wore the Queens badge in cloth on the beret. They now wear the PWRR's badge.

Manchester 'School Cap' badge but not the OTC badge.

Latter versions had it embroidered on

Default Aldenham School OTC

Can anyone confirm which badge the OTC wore?

I suspect the brass one is the OTC one as the OTC button is the same design without the Gods Gift scroll?

Default Aldenham

Alan,

I believe both have been worn by the school corps. John Sainsbury's book shows the WM badge being worn on beret in the 1950's. The corps re-badge in 1982 as Royal Anglian.
The 1938 Journal of the Society for Army Historical Research lists current badge of Aldenham School OTC as 'The school Arms with crest and mantling'. Similar with button with additional school name.

Stephen.

Thanks. I am confident that both were worn but suspect that the w/m one is CCF and not OTC. As you say in 1938 they are wearing the badge without any mention of the scroll suggesting that it is the brass one.

On page 12 of "Hertfordshire's Army Cadets" is a photo of The Aldenham School OTC shooting team at Bisley in 1937. They are wearing the smaller badge without the scroll.

Page 90 shows the Corps of Drums in the early 1950's wearing the larger badge. Interestingly, he notes that they are still wearing JTC cloth shoulder titles.

Aldenham School OTC was formed as a contingent of the Junior Division OTC on 17th of July 1908.

They became a JTC in october 1940

Incorporated into the CCF in September 1948

Disbanded as a CCF in November 1990

Re-formed as a CCF in April 2006

Information comes from "Hertfordshire's Army Cadets" by J. D. Sainsbury

A nice badge Alan. I am after the brass one myself.

Andy
