My understanding is that many British PoWs held in Germany during the Great War returned home via Holland. These were not the same men that were interned in neutral Holland during the war who also returned via the same route.

Those members of the RMB held in Gronigen after Antwerp were allowed a great degree of freedom. Many were allowed periods of leave in the U.K. on the strict understanding that they returned to Holland for the duration.

Your man's papers should be on Ancestry.

Yes, as said, I take the card to have been sent by a released prisoner.
I'll get around to a little on line research on him again.

Here is my example, arrived today.

Not my area of collecting interest but I do appreciate a very rare badge such as this.

What I find amazing is how professionally its made.

Stamped out perfectly, enamelled and with a pin.

How did they get all the materials and equipment to do it?

I would like to know roughly how many were made.

regards

How would PoW's arrange and pay for such a service within enemy territory?

I cant see that myself.

I'm thinking more Holland than enemy territory.
So I've probably got that wrong (I was thinking of some photos and postcards I have from a man who was PW Germany then Holland).
I don't know though, I'm still thinking local craftsmen rather than PW workshop made.
Though having said that - would local craftsmen be prepared to produce a badge with the Union flag on?

PoWs were issued pocket money by the German authorities to spend on necessities such as soap and toothpaste. However, these may have been paid for out of regimental funds.

Leigh,

Having just re read the section o the badge in Personal Distinctions by John Rawlinson (which I should have done first) it states that the badges were made by the internees in the camp workshops along with other souvenirs that were advertised for sale in the 'Globe and Laurel' magazine.

Does anyone have a copy of such an advert?

regards

' Fraid not (having inspected a European prison where prisoners manned a workshop making locks and keys some years ago I suppose I shouldn't be surprised at badges being run off).

The type of badge you show I havn't seen before, just illustrations of gilt and enamel ones.

Interesting that you say you have seen gilt and enamel versions.

My badge and that of Paddy's shown in a old link in this thread are certainly made of a grey metal, tin or alloy and certainly nowhere near the quality of gilt.

Th photo on P. 103 of Rawlinson does have a gold finish but I always put that down to the camera flash.

I would be interested to know if you have actually handled gilt versions and and photos of them

regards

I have only seen illustrations of the gilt and enamel badge in auction catalogue gues. I'll check, see if I have one of the catalogues.

A previous thread on Tues PW badges, presumably the one you mention:
