Have found info to back up Chris's post.

"The FX prefix was issued to ratings in the Fleet Air Arm.
It later became LFX and eventually just L
Prefixes donated the port authority which looked after the ratings welfare.
D for Devonport (Plymouth)
P for Portsmouth
L for Lee on Solent (wafus)"

Also:

CAE Chief Aircraft Engineer (in DEME(A))

DEME(A) Director Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (Army)

That's great, thanks for the quick responses you two.

This is the set of medals, on the GSM I can only work out the word 'EAST' I'm guessing Near East?

The friend is here in Greece and he was given the medals 40 years ago by his language tutor....a nice gift.

But he has had difficulty finding anything out about the owner.

Regards
Sean

The 1915 NGSM was never awarded without a clasp. The seventeen clasps authorised are list below, the figures in brackets denoting the number awarded.

Near East (17,800). For operations during the Suez Crisis of 1956.

Hi Sean

Looking at the group and the length of the brass bar I would suggest that a 1939 - 45 star is missing, it would probably be unnamed and there fore easily replaced if you don't have it.

Regards

Phil.

I wonder if it is also missing a Naval LSGC medal as there is also a gap after the GSM. Would make sense if he was still in service in 1956.
Cheers,
Alex

The War Medal appears to have a Mention In Dispatches oakleaf, the awarding of that might appear in print somewhere?

I believe it's Chief Aircraft Engineer (Airframes), others being Engines (E), Ordnance (O), Electrical (L) and Radio (R).
