WW1 RAF Service Dress cap badge?

Another recent acquisition of mine is this Service Dress cap badge.
I think this may be a WW1 type or slightly later?
It also seems to be slightly smaller than WW2 types & exhibits some lovely toned embroidery.

A very nice looking, well made badge. However, I wonder if the eagle is a replacement. I wonder because it seems unusual that the tangs come through the cloth backing. I would have thought that the eagle was attached before the backing cloth was stitched on.

I may, of course, be wrong.

Ignore, the above. I am wrong. I have just checked my examples and the tangs do come through the cloth backing.
