Default Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire regimental titles.

According to their War Diary WO166/4131 dated 29.09.39. Order issued that 6 Bn, Beds & Herts no longer wear ‘T’ and ‘6’ on shoulders.

So far as I'm aware there was never a Bedfs & Herts T Title. The 6th were a Duplicate TA Bn formed from 5 Bn, B&H.

Could the TA Bn still have been wearing old T/5/BEDFORD titles, or just BEDFORD with a separate T and numeral?

It wasn't until 14.05.40. at the 68th Meeting of the War Committee that it was agreed that the issue of metal titles and badges of rank should be discontinued. The wearing of metal badges already in troops’ possession was not forbidden.

15.05.40. ACI 466: Instructions issued regarding Dress to be worn for the duration of the war. Full Dress and mess Dress were not to be worn. Subject to exceptions, SD or BD were to be worn by all serving personnel on all occasions. Collar badges were retained for wear on SD. The letter ‘T’ referred to in TF Regs 1936, paras 527 and 548, will cease to be worn by officers and other ranks for whom it has hitherto been prescribed; battalion numbers will also be omitted from the shoulder title worn by other ranks of TA infantry battalions.

Observations on this, or the practice adopted by other Duplicate units please.

Stephen.
