Personally I'd go for Zulu and Kelly's Heroes.

Default War themes

Whilst the best actual movie has to be Zulu, when it comes to a great day's viewing, and music, then the Seven Pillars of Wisdom must rate very highly. Everyone of a certain age can hum 'Lara's theme' from Dr Chivago, but can that be counted as a war film or a love story?
In the final analysis the Dam Busters March must take primacy.

Stephen.

PS- I'd forgotten Good Morning Vietnam as a first clas compilation!

Not really a film I know, but "The Monocled Mutineer". Sets the scene perfectly. The theme to "The Deer Hunter" (Cavatina)- Wonderful!! So many others; "Das Boot", "The Enemy below" (I remember reading the book when I was at school. It is interesting that a British destroyer suddenly became American in Hollywood). "Kelly's Heroes", the list goes on....................

Stephen mentioned "Lara's theme". Along the same lines is the theme to "Barry Lyndon" (Schubert?). Just Awesome...................

Seven Pillars of Wisdom? You mean the film version? I guess this is Peter O'Toole's great classic movie 'Lawrence of Arabia'

Do you think I'm just anybody, Ali? Do you?

Lawrence: I killed two people. One was... yesterday? He was just a boy and I led him into quicksand. The other was... well, before Aqaba. I had to execute him with my pistol, and there was something about it that I didn't like.
General Allenby: That's to be expected.
Lawrence: No, something else.
General Allenby: Well, then let it be a lesson.
Lawrence: No... something else.
General Allenby: What then?
Lawrence: I enjoyed it.

General Murray: I can't make out whether you're bloody bad-mannered or just half-witted.
Lawrence: I have the same problem, sir.

I'd have to say 'The Dambusters' and the music from 'The Battle of Britain', including the bit by Sir William Walton. Apparently he composed the music for the movie but only part of it was used, which put him in a bit of a snit. probably one of the last pieces he wrote before he died.

I also found the music to the TV series 'Colditz' very striking. Much different (the series) to the remake (if that's what you could call it) with Damien Lewis and Laurence Fox et al. Not bad, but originals are always best, IMO.

Eric Coates wrote some stirring music for a proposed film, "The Battle of El Alamein"
Sadly the film was never made; however the music was transferred to another film, "The Dambusters".

Oh .... how I love threads like these !

ok my choices - hard to pick just one so Dambusters ,Great Escape and a Bridge too Far are up near the top.

633 Squadron a very underrated film

Das boot

The Guns Of Navarone - just for the sheer fact of Anthony Quale playing an S.O.E officer the role he did for real in Greece / Albania in 1944 which is a little known fact .......and of course the actress Gina Scala who had a very `strange ` affect on me as a 11 year old boy ...............

The Third Man - ok post war Vienna but oh that music

As for my all time best it would have to be `The HORSE SOLDIERS ` the US cavalry " I wrote my love a letter an I left it in a tree ....."

I know this choice is a bit out side the box but if you utube the film bit where they are singing this it will be stuck in side your head all week .

As for my all time best best theme bit of a cheat here but it will always be the theme from the Tv series
`WORLD AT WAR ` any one of my generation that was allowed to stop up and see this whilst still a young boy its just seared in to my soul

Many great films. I would add The Horse Soldiers, I Left My Love. Also, while it isn't a motion picture but a television series in the early 1950's, Victory At Sea was outstanding, at least the music was.
