RAF or continental air force eagle?
Hi,
Please could someone advise if this is an RAF or foreign / continental air force eagle? The badge is made of brass and hollowed out as seen. The reason that I am asking is that the eagle head is facing to the left as opposed to the right (which as far as I am aware, would make it RAF if facing to the right). Also, could it perhaps be a Free Polish Air Force eagle (as the maker says Firmin and therefore be British made but for Polish Air Force)? On the other hand, could it be a copy as the Firmin maker stamp is raised and not stamped into the metal....i.e. this could be the sign of a copy.... Finally, if this is genuine, would it have been worn on a cap? Any feedback would be much appreciated. Many thanks |

I have re-posted this in the RAF post section as this seems to be the correct place for it. Please could someone advise as to how the post in this section can be deleted if possible? Apologies for any inconveniences. Many thanks.

RAF eagle
This badge is part of the post-war aircrew rank structure, it was worn on the RIGHT sleeve (the eagles always face rearwards on the sleeve), either above sergeants chevrons for Sgt Aircrew, above the chevrons and below a crown for Flt Sgt Aircrew or worn on the right cuff badge of a Master Aircrew. If worn on the cuff of a flying suit, the eagles were removed to avoid becoming lost and becoming a loose article hazard (this would require finding or securing prior to an aircraft being cleared for flight again).
These aircrew eagles are frequently mistaken for Pathfinder badges; the eagles, though originally brass (gilding metal), were changed to anodised aluminium in 1972, though some older personnel continued to wear brass to remind newer folk (issued with A/A) where they stood in the 'pecking order'. Some of the earlier 1950s Master Aircrew badges had embroidered eagles, though I think these were changed to align with the Sgt and Flt Sgt ranks and their wearing of brass eagles.
