Default Scots Guards officers

A recent acquisition, what I think is a Scots Guards officers headdress badge, by J.R. GAUNT LONDON with very long loops.

Could anyone date this badge and confirm my thoughts on it.

Thanks for looking

Rob

Yes, definitely a service dress cap badge with those long lugs. No idea on date.
Cheers,
Alex

Alex, I think this is silver and gilt, a drop of soap and water and some elbow grease may provide the answer.

But thanks for your confirmation.

Regards Rob

I is without doubt silver and gilt. A very nice small badge.

Difficult to date as worn upon the SD cap from it's inception, but, from the photographs, I would think is vintage and not brand new, I would think certainly WW2 and perhaps older with that particular mark to it's reverse.

Yes, Frank is right I'm sure. Looks silver rather than silver plated and those long sturdy lugs are better quality than newer examples. Just unable to nail down a definite date, could be anything from WWII to probably 1950s.

Thanks chaps, this is a lovely little badge, which I have given a good clean with soap and water, not sure whether silver or plated as there are no hallmarks as expected with silver badges, so I will leave as is, to go on the Scots Guards badge board.

I have a Wiltshire Officers silver plate and gilt, with the D of E cypher. Same curved Gaunt London mark and cypher fixed with bent wire fittings as the SG badge.

The clue (in my opinion) with silver badges is that if the lugs are copper and soldered onto a silvered badge, then the badge will be silver. If the lugs are silvered, then the badge is plated. They would not have fitted lugs after plating as it may damage the plating. You do get silver badges with silver lugs but the lugs are usually heavier and not quite the same style as copper lugs.
