It looks suspiciously like the Prince of Wales' feather to me.

Henk,
I am not sure exactly as the photograph is circa 1910. Is the one that you have posted an O.S.D. pattern badge as the one in the original photograph looks taller? Simon. |

According to K & K The 2nd VB (Earl of Chesters') wore a POW feathers with the Glengarry so it's possible that they continued wearing that badge when associated with the Cheshires.

The Earl of Chester is the Prince of Wales hence the use of his badge. I think the photo is between 1887-1901 as they used the Cheshire Regiment badge after that date. All the Rifle Volunteer badges are along a similar vein of the Prince of Wales plumes or a Wheatsheath. That's the first photo I have seen with a clear view of the badge.

It's a white metal collar badge.

I am told (meaning: read on the Internet, or maybe even here in the forums) that it is a badge for the said unit. No idea about officers or not. And yes, it deviates from the "normal" form of a POW feathers. And yes, you photo seems top have a more normal form of POW feathers.

As to the date, the back of the photograph suggests circa 1910. I now know that he was appointed Lieutenant 20th November 1895, Captain 20th June 1900 and Honorary Major 25th February 1908. |
