Inherited collection from the great war. Anything stand out?
Hello from New Zealand.
Just looking for any info on this bunch of badges I inherited 30 years ago. Wow time flys! I remember playing with them as a little kid at my grandparents place, on special occasions long before the box was handed to one xmas years later. They were collected by my great uncle who served towards the end of the War as part of the NZ expeditionary force. They were all in a box, but about 15 years ago I put them on this frame and they have been in the cupboard ever since as I concentrated on NZ badges......but these are what started my interest. Collected by my great great Uncle Private A Stace Company 20th Platoon 41st Reinforcements Sailed 27-7-18 Question is does anything stand out ? Or not fit with the ww1 time frame? Sadly in the 60's my grandfather thought it a good idea to take a bunch of them and make a bloody chess set! ...face palm moment.. Any way years later with family approval I rescued about 10 that he hadn't totally messed up and carefully bent the sliders back down with only a small drill hole in the slider as a reminder of his handy work. Because they were in the family for so long..... do any not fit with the great war period. I was always unsure about the wings badge at the bottom right. Happy to add closer photos of any of them front and back for any reason. Just ask. Cheers Corey Last edited by Corey; 14-11-21 at 06:55 AM. |

The Cardiff City Battalion is a nice pals collar badge.
That Huntingdonshire Cyclists looks like it may be a Lambourne made example. |

A great lot, Corey. Good that you rescued them.
I note a small RAF badge. Does it have a slider or lugs? Thanks for sharing. John |

I once saw a very nice display of various badges in a local veteran's club. They were on beams above the bar but just in case some decided to help themselves, they'd all been drilled and nailed (or screwed, but they were "screwed" after all...) to the beams...
Sigh...... |

It has lugs. Looking at it I would almost say it's been cast? Cheers |

The 16th Welsh (Cardiff City) Batt’n collar badge is spot on but it is not a Pals badge as they were the 11th Batt’n.

The Leinster is what has been coined on here as a 'curly scroll Leinster'. If you type in the search box 'Welsh feathers curly scroll Leinster' you might be able to read a number of discussions on it.
With some serendipity you have photographed it next to a 3rd Dragoon Guards badge which shows, at least from where I'm sat, a striking die similarity between feathers and coronet. That is, they look to be from the very same die. The stalks on the Leinster just being shortened slightly to allow the scroll to sit snug and flat. Is the scroll solid on the reverse (i.e. not die struck)? Would I be correct in that the 3rd Dragoons has a round topped 3 (just like the numeral typed) as opposed to a flat top 3? East Surrey
The East Surrey is also interesting. Another wartime expedient possibly?
I can see it has a Victorian era crown, but is it of poor die quality and does it have a slider as opposed to loops. If so, I'm reliably informed these were wartime expedients using old dies and probably produced by fairly unskilled workers as the able men were called up. |

Sorry I know nothing about UK badges. Can you clarify what you mean about "not a Pals badge"? Cheers |

Yes the 3 has a rounded top. And it looks like both of them were saved from the infamous chess set looking at the holes in the sliders and some remaining varnish residue from the wood chess peices they were once screwed to...... Last edited by Corey; 14-11-21 at 10:43 AM. |

The Cardiff Pals were a battalion of the Welsh Regiment and your badge is often misidentified as one of theirs. In reality as Luke says it was a collar badge worn by the 16th Battalion. |
