Default Coloured Mercantile shoulder cords

Wonder if anyone can explain the significance of coloured shoulder cords, presumably worn by stewards/pursers on the larger liners.
The dark blue cord has Cunard buttons; the light blue also comes with KC Royal Mail Line buttons, apart from the generic Merchant Navy design, silvered. I am unsure whether the purple cord is nautical or else a bandsman's.
