One of the things that would give me a good insight into the early Firmin motto is seeing an Officers HMd Silver motto by Firmin for the period 1900-40. I have an image of a 1946...... but to date seen nothing earlier.

Default I am shocked

I have just sold this to a forum member for £40.00.I offered him the badge as I am giving up collecting.I had the badge repaired so know full well it is made of brass. He claims he has cleaned it and it is white metal worth £20.00.I am speechless

Monty

There is no argument here.... I can buy these old Firmin (unmarked) white metals on ebay for around £20..... from dealers you will pay more.

This badge was sold as brass.... its clearly not. Here is the Motto as received.... and again after a "brief" clean.

** What was the repair?

I have yellow curtains next to me ..... but its clean white metal. Happy enough that its an original Firmin. I have had this before with an eBay purchase..... it was AlanO that pointed out that it was probably a very dirty white metal (see below) and he was right. All I have highlighted to Monty is.... the reason why I clean my badges....."Patina" or "Filth" can mask the truth.

* Have not asked for my money back.
* I am happy enough with the badge as it is...... just another into the large collection of Mottoes

Furthermore .. Monty got the badge to me next day & postage was included

here it is (a little more clean) between some LB&BCo Mottoes.... what do you think? The Brass LB&BCo's are factory blanks that have not been nickel plated.

Its is a pre 1946 old Firmin.... thats for sure. I think the best thing to do is give it a thorough clean.... then let it settle for a few months amongst its peers and then see how it looks...

I will also take some detail macro images of the back of the Motto ..... that has not been cleaned thoroughly yet. Am I guilty of over cleaning it (if you can) so you cant see the brass?

Hi Andy

No..... I have had younger eyes look at it and its a very pale yellow..... my old eyes and todays light got it wrong. But it is pale..... hence "my" mistake. Its a hard one to see when its very clean compared to other brass badges when cleaned. I will post up another pic when its had time on the board..... it should mellow and darken a bit.

Try and spot it amongst other pre 1946 old Firmins.... its not easy (below)
