Repair or not?
I have had this RND arm badge for a while, it's in the same condition as when I bought it which after a hundred years is not surprising that moths have had a feed.
Is there a way of replacing the missing pieces using Khaki wool from a similar item? Or would it be better to leave well alone? Your thoughts appreciated. Rob |

I'd leave well alone, to me it's better to have a tatty original than one that's fiddled with and is part brand new. I'd expect to pay far less for the latter if indeed I'd consider buying the badge at all.
For display purposes perhaps just cut a small piece of matching fabric and slip it into place to cover the white backing fabric from view although it's not something I'd bother doing. Just the way I view these things, others will disagree. |

I’m with Leigh. It’s lovely and original so best leave it as it is. Like you say Rob after 100 years it’s not surprising the moths have had a lunch or two on it.

There is a thread about filling moth holes with tiny balls of donor material. It would work to some extent I suppose....

Yes, some collectors shave fibres from the badge or garment and use them with a blob of glue to fill holes.
I have a WWII era German field grey panzer cap which has had that treatment, personally Id've left it well alone. |

The actual insignia itself is perfect, as a badge I think it is a lovely example, I would certainly not take away a degree of originality by altering it in any way.

It would certainly devalue a fairly scarce badge!

Repairs to RND "mudhook"
Further thanks chaps, I will leave it alone and keep it with the rest of the mans medals and badges away from insects etc.

You have accompanying medals and insignia, that sounds like a nice grouping.
