Without seeing the rear I'd say it's a lady's ball gown belt. There are lots of similar military badged examples.

I'd tend to agree with Eddie - military themed civilian accessory.

I'd say it was a slightly ropey representation of the Knight Commander of the Bath (KCB) Civil star. So worn by the wife of a KCB.

Do you mean it would have some semi-offical staus then, Eddie, or just a shiny bity to keep up with hubby?

We constantly see gold lace belts with gilt buckles bearing regimental badges, usually gilt collars. These were worn by wives attending prestigious balls and royal levees. I think this is something similar. I don't think it's official.

Fair enough and a very plausible explanation, as the Colonel's wife would almost certainly have wanted to display as much bling as her hubby!

Absolutely - but not in this case since this is a KCB Civil, not the military version which looks quite different.

Having seen those photos I am revising my opinion - I now think this looks far too heavy to be associated with a lady's levee belt. But what is it - I am flummoxed!

hi eddie
i agree. now i have it in my hands its bigger and heavier than the usual male buckles so doubt a female would wear it and it is beautifully made. full gilt and looks like silver badge. bc |

It's a bit odd in that it looks very like a military sword belt buckle, but it is definitely a civil award badge. Nice thing though.

Perhaps the way it is supposed to be done up will give you an answer to if it's for a lady or not.
