Did the reverse (what you may have been able to see of it) have the same finish as the obverse?

Perhaps a gentle tap when you first spotted it, revealing the absence of a metallic 'ting' sound, might have caught the seller out.

The item is made of what's termed 'filled resin' or 'cold cast resin'.

It's a resin loaded with fine particles of brass or copper 'dust'. When cured it forms a matrix of metal particles embeded within the resin and can be polished to give an appearance close to metal on casual inspection.

A slightly similar process is used in sintering, although this uses fusing rather than resin to bind the material together.

Not even the rivets? Is there nothing on an original that is steel?

An 1897 pattern British officers gilt gorget, worn into the 1830's should have no rivets.

Just two holes at the end where the neck ribbon passe through.
