Default Comments welcome please

Just bought these 4 badges (seller offers refund if not genuine). I'm happy with one of them, reasonably happy with one other, have doubts over one other and serious doubts over the other. All comments/opinions welcome (if the majority matches my opinions then I must be learning something).

The "V"s on the Life Guards badges are separate from the leg of the "R". The slider on the 1st LG is nice and thick and has signs of a crimp mark. The slider on the 2nd LG is also pretty thick and strong. Slider on 3rd KOH is strong and slightly tapered and the horse is a nice patina however the scroll is flat backed and there are no dots/lines below the "RD". The braize on all badges is a yellowy gold colour.

Many thanks in advance

Paddy

Paddy,
has the 3Huss got a sweat hole to the rear of the Coronet, does not matter that much anyway as to me they all look 100%! 4 out of 4 from me!

Default 3rd Dragoon Guards

Hi Paddy, The 2 badges I have to this Reg't, an early one on lugs and a later one with slider both have a single braze hole behind the coronet. This is usually considered a good indication of an original. Can't quite see if the badge you pictured has this feature.

Andy & Leonard D

Many thanks for your replies. I did check your album before the post and the 2 LG badges look very similar to yours. The 3rd Dragoons badge does not have an "obvious" sweathole behind the coronet (I would have preferred it to have one) however there is a lot of braize or slag where the hole should be. Is this a case of the hole being filled in by an over zealous braizer or is it a case of braize running down from the scroll tabs and slider to collect in a low point. This is the badge I have serious doubts over. I have attached a picture of the area behind the coronet.

Paddy

Hi Paddy, from the photo you posted there appears to be residue of some sort which may be covering a braze hole.
I will add a photo for comparison later today.

Hi All,

Have any of you guys ever done an investigation into the slider designs and the companies that used the designs and the era that the designs were used in used for gilded and white metal badges?

This would be the solution to a lot of these questions on authenticity. You should do the same with lug usage too.

I don't know anything about these sort of badges but I'd bet a fiver that the 3rd Kings Own Hussars was made by Smith & Wright and have a good idea who may have made the 3rd Dragoon Guards and First Life Guards too. The 2nd Life Guards has me stumped though.

Regards

Chris

Chris,

The problem is that so few Ors badges were maker marked so it is really difficuly to work out who made what.

I cant see a line under the RD of the 3rd Kings Hussars in the original post, which imo makes the badge a wrong one.

Hi Mac,

Different slider = Different maker = Different obverse die perhaps?

here is the badge I have, the diffrences I notice are no spots on scroll as it folds back at bottom, on rear the white metal is attached to brass, and it has the gaunt with a dot, looks nice though, now need to find how to attach pic1
