Default Royal Norfolk Regt with spear.

Standard Royal Norfolk Britannia brass cap badge, but the trident has been changed to a spear, by filling the two sides of the trident.
I have been told this was done , but this is the first one I have found.
I can think of no reason why this has been done, unless it is to make the badge look like an older one.

Options for change? Spears are cheaper than tridents.

That would be quite a stretch though for whoever had that in mind, since as I understand it the 'Britannia' figure with trident dates from circa 1829-44 as found on the Bell top shako badge, with the figure with trident appearing on new colours presented in 1848. Clearly that was a good fifty years before 'modern' cap badges evolved for Field Service and Service Dress head gear.
