Unknown South Wales Borderers
Can anyone offer any light on these two?
The first is similar to fig.682 in Churchill, but is with a complete wreath and the Dragon superimposed over. It appears to be nickel over brass i.e for our purposes in white metal and is 42mm(1 5/8th's in) in diameter. Definitetly a cap badge. The second is in gilding metal and is a small badge of collar dog size as fig.683 in Churchill, 30mm(1 3/16th's in) in diameter. Thanks in anticipation. |

Unknown SWB badge 1
This badge I think has been made from a RMLI three piece glengarry wreath (KK1094) which is the same dimensions and a Welsh Regt collar badge (Churchill 1151). It's obviously two part construction and could have been worn as a pouch badge or on bandsmans music cases. I would be interested to find out the definite origins and purpose of this type of badge.

Two possibilities come to mind for the first badge. The 1st Battalion Monmouthshire Regt had a similar badge in 1922, but with WW1 battle honours superimposed on the wreath. Also the Royal Regiment of Wales had a similar arrangement as their collar badge and I wondered if it might be something to do with them.

Toby,
Monmouthshire tends to be the favourite scource at the present, but earlier than their post 1920 pattern. Nothing has come up at the museums in Cardiff and Brecon. Certainly nothing to do with the Welsh regiment as that is my main area of collecting and I have not noticed anything similar during my research. The pattern of dragon does not match anything used by the regiment either. Last edited by 41st; 27-01-08 at 05:57 PM. Reason: Typo |
