Default Coronation Medal

Hi All,

not technically a badge, but....

A friend has recently gotten hold of their Grandfathers Medals (WW2) and badges. They include The Defence Medal, War Medal 1939/45, Africa star (no ribbon or clasp) what looks like a West Riding Sweetheart - a silver, pin-back of the cap badge, and a post war West Riding association badge. The odd one out is this, below. I did a search, and see they are about, but don't seem to be the standard 1937 coronation medal. Anyone know what it might be? The Africa Star was on a piece of green ribbon, clearly wrong, so possibly over the years the medals have been messed with, though never out of the families hands.

Any info gratefully received

cheers, Tim

Its a civilian souvenir tribute medal for the coronation.

handed out like confetti, in their thousands.

This is not an official medal. It is a commemorative piece made for some municipal authority to commemorate the Coronation of 1937. There are many examples of such medals for the various Coronations and Jubilees of the 20th Century. They mostly used the red/white/blue ribbon of many different widths and qualities.

I'm not very good at medals but this group includes what I've been told are various Jubilee and Coronation medals - what were they awarded for?

Very interesting group spanning many years - Military cross, order of St Johns decoration, WW1 pair, 3 x WW2 medals, Jubilee medal 1935 (silver jubilee of George V), Coronation medal for George V1,diamond jubilee medal and last a territorial decoration with bar.

My guess would be these represent a family group put together on one bar. Further research would be possible from the naming on the full size medals..

Cheers, Mark

The above group is possible to one person and I'd hazard a guess that they were all awarded to one individual.

The last but one medal is the coronation medal of Queen Elizabethh II, not a jubilee medal. I feel this is a complete set for an individual and not a conglomoration of different family medals.

Yes - possible to one person, but as I said - very long service.

Yes, all to one man. MC on the Somme (KLR then MGC), OTC etc between the wars and RAMC in the 2nd WW.

Anyway, thanks for IDs but they appear to be in the wrong order
1 G VI
2 G V1
3 G V & Qn
4 G V1 & Qn
5 Eliz 2

why would he have got all these ??

Medals have an order of wear so medal for bravery 1st ie M/C , then others in order 1st WW,2nd WW then any coronation/jubilee medals then the territorial so I think they are in correct order.

The coronation/jubilee medals were given to armed forces personel and others who had served their country in some capacity at the qualyfying date.

The combination of medals looks feasible to me. It covers a period of about 37 years (1916-53).

The jubilee and coronation medals are in the correct order (1935-1937-1953). The QE II coronation medal was awarded to civilians as well as the armed forces, so it's possible that he may have received it in some civilian capacity.

An entirely plausible set. My Great Uncle's is similar bar the QEII Coronation and St Johns and with the addition of a French CDG and Africa Star.
