Default Cloth Insignia on Shoulder Strap

Would anybody be able to ID what this Royal Fusilier might be wearing on the shoulder strap in this picture, please?

With thanks,

JT

Looks to be a picture of a group of RF Service battalion soldiers taken in 1915/16 just based on all soldiers wearing leather 14 pattern equipment belts, standard RF Grenade shoulder titles and one soldier wearing the simplified jacket(introduced in Oct 1914 but probably not in widespread wear until late 1914 at the earliest) and all wearing the stiff topped 1905 pattern cap replaced in 1916 by the soft cap (aka trench cap). Of course this dating can't be proven its just my best guess. Battle insignia was not in widespread use until 1917/18 so if it is an earl war picture its quite interesting. I would say given the placement of the patch it's a battalion designation. Its a shame that the left shoulder straps of the other two soldiers are not visible to corroborate this. I'll see what my references turn up when I get home.

Thanks for that, Mark. Appreciate you taking the time to reply.

Unfortunately, the picture is no longer in my possession so I am unable to scan at a higher resolution, or to check the reverse for other possible info.

Regards,

JT.

I'm away from my references but 4th Battalion wore a blue/red square on the shoulder straps - however is that square monotone (?) and the 1914 belts suggest a service battalion.

Hi JT,
The 2/4th Battn wore a 2&1/4 inch square Khaki slip on with an embroidered rose, that's all I could see in the IWM stuff mate,
Wilf.

Thanks for these, gents. I have to admit that I see only a plain field on this swatch of cloth, but I am very grateful for all/any opinions and suggestions.

Many thanks.

JT

The man on the left has something on his right strap aswell.
Looks around the strap rather than the first one that seems stitched on.
