Default WW2 RAF Service Records/Nominal Roll

Hi Guys,

Just wondering if there an online nominal roll of people who served in the RAF during WW2?

I have quite an unusual bit of research I'm trying to do.

A relative (great uncle) served in the HK Police Special Branch during WW2 and was involved in doing espionage and other secret spy stuff against the Japanese.

He was issued an official RAF ID in a false name and I was wondering if this false name would be recorded in any nominal roll.

Quite intriguing.

That's a good question. Unfortunately, I can't help but would be interested in what you find out.

My guess is that as its a fake ID it probably won't be found in the nominal roll.

I believe this guy also did secret stuff with the OSS against the Japanese.

Mick,

The National Archives hold a series of cards, that lists the names and service number (and sometimes DoB) of all RAF personnel from 1918-1975.

You can query on line, at no charge, but it's quite hard work. It's basically an online copy of the microfiche of all the cards, alphabetically.

It's the Air78 series. For example, Air 78/60/8 is for:
George, Jessie Small - Getgood, Samuel.

Air 78/34/8 lists Collins, John Bernard - Collins, William.

And so on......

Hope this helps.

Regards John.

Thanks John - probably not worth the effort as it’s a false name.

I suspect I won’t find anything.

Constantin Kriloff served with the Hong Kong Police from 1930 to 1953. He was with the Special Branch and was involved in investigating Japanese and German activities in Hong Kong. Hence why I think he ended up in the Special Operations Executive.

He escaped from Hong Kong and I believed served with the Special Operations Executive (SOE) in the Far East engaging in clandestine activities against the Japanese.

Check out the official issue ID Card in the name of Alexander Kennedy - one of his official aliases.

I believed he also may have worked with the British Army Aid Group in South China. He certainly got around during the war - Hong Kong, China, India, Burma and even the USA. All under a fake RAF ID.

He was married to my grandfather's cousin and died in Brisbane, Australia in the 1950s.

I wonder if he spoke any languages like Cantonese or possibly Mandarin if he went to the mainland? He may even have known Japanese?

Yes to Cantonese. He would have learnt it as a member of the Hong Kong Police. It would have served him well when he was in Southern China (most likely working with the BAAG).
