Here we go.
Ebay - 2 berets (good story behind them) sold. To me looked pretty good. But you buy the item not the story. Cap badge on 1 of them has 2 diff types of red stitching used. I know the current owner as do at least 2 other members on this site.
C and T/ Chairborne - same beret. Looks similar to one of those from Ebay. I'm certain that this capbadge has a similar 2 different red used. Black/brown bands. IMO it would most probably be both. The only way is for those collectors with berets WITH provenance to show close ups. We've all seen berets with both colours used. On ops one has to consider the use of local taylors for this stuff...makes it a dream for a good faker, but sadly thats the way it is. If one is willing to pay extortionate money for a rare badge, beret or Stirlings underpants, without provenance, then they need to be prepared to accept bad news as well as good in the future with regards to their purchase. At the end of the day there is no such thing as black leather, just brown leather that's been dyed. It could be possible that the die has faded and appears brown, I’ve seen this on more modern items, let alone something that purports to be nearly 80 years old, made with vegetable dyes and probably not a lot of skill, care and attention in a developing country. The seller does state the band has been replaced as has the other one referred to earlier (that has cast iron provenance), as has the one in Lock’s book.

I met the source of the two that were on ebay and personally examined both of those berets. They one at C&T is not either of those. I spent a lot of time questioning the seller of the two berets and how they came into their possession and having worked as an adviser to global law enforcement agencies on fraud, organised crime, scamming and generally bad dudes and er dudettes (seller was a lady!) if they were scammers then they were without precedent...as to whether genuine or not...i defer to more experienced collectors but the two i saw, held, smelt, examined etc etc.....i would have enjoyed looking at them on a daily basis....
