I have no problem with anyone asking for help in ID'ing something, I do it and that is where the forum excels and I have no problem with people selling here, we all sell some items some of the time I assume.
It is just the perception on my part that some just use the forum as advertising for their off site sales and thereby push up the prices rather than just sell them here. Seeing whats for sale is I am sure an endless obsession with all of us who collect and knowing whats for sale is only a good thing, but.... At the end of the day I merely made an observation and I am glad to see it did stimulate some debate and I am pleased to see all the viewpoints expressed.

It seems to be the case that as long as each seller's modi operandi are within the bounds of forum etiquette there is no cause for alarm. As you say, anybody attempting to slip though the net (intentionally or otherwise) will be picked up somewhere along the line. Though some seem to be of the opinion that there are those who enjoy 'diplomatic immunity' and get away unchecked, with perennially bending the rules. Agreed, we are all seeking to multiply our collections. That grey area you allude to should, theoretically, be well and truly covered by the 'declaration' protocol (sounds like a Robert Ludlum novel ). If you're a fulltime dealer, it covers you, and if you're a casual seller, it covers you too. But clearly there are issues with this for some. People are (for want of a better word) offended by what they see as the forum and its members being used purely to advance sellers' profiles and profits for minimal returns.
