Help ID a waist belt clasp, Defence Not Defiance
Does anyone know for sure who this clasp was for.
The outer ring bears the title "DEFENCE NOT DEFIANCE", which seems to be a popular motto of the rifle volunteers based on the poem by Martin Farquhar Tupper "Defence Not Defiance (A Rifle Song)". If I assume the 1 in the centre to be an order of precedence then it suggests Devonshire. But I assume it could be a battalion/company or corps number? I know most Scottish units prefered "IN DEFENCE", but a few did use "DEFENCE NOT DEFIANCE", but the centre doesn't really suggest Scottish to me. |

Sorry I cannot help but I did notice that motto on the front of the old Patricroft Drill Hall in a photo the other day.

Hello,
"DEFENCE NOT DEFIANCE" was one of several mottos adopted by the newly formed RVC's in 1859 -1860 period and cannot be attributed to one particular unit. Unfortunately being the 1st means it could be any of the counties in England, Scotland or Wales and was probably a generic item bought by many units. None the less a lovely WBC. regards

Simon,
A sign of the times, like a great many of the units that used to occupy them, there are not many of the original Drill Halls still standing. Peter
