Default HKP Fake. Thoughts?

This one appears to have been rather craftily fashioned to incorporate a slider stamped with a UK manufacturer's mark.

I found this yesterday, it doesn't look right to me.

I've seen versions of this badge with sliders and a version with lugs.

Are both authentic? Or was one worn by commissioned HKP officers and the other by constables?

Trying to find out more about this badge as my Grand father served in the HKP during WW2.

The problem is that since the return of the Colony to China in 1997, the locals there have been very busy reproducing allegedly authentic HKP and RHKP items, ever keen to make a quick buck.

I have a fairly large collection of police items from Hong Kong. The KC named HKP cap badge was produced in three slightly differing designs. The first issue was lugged and the two following versions were slidered. However, I have seen a locally hand made solid silver HKP cap badge which was commissioned by a senior officer and actually worn by him. That had on it a slider and was slightly smaller than the issued cap badge. Unfortunately, I can't comment on whether my examples are maker marked as they are in a frame.

As to the badge which is the subject of this thread, I don't like the look of it for a variety of reasons. I hope this is helpful.

Dave.

Apart from minor differences in design, attributed to them emanating from different makers, there is a considerable variation in the metal used in these badges.Pre RHKP, badges for the Rank and File were often procured from local (HK) sources, these were very tinny,a thin and light alloy from which the slider, held on by a ' blob ' of solder, which regularly separated. They were die stamped.Cap and collar badges for the Inspectorate and above came from a variety of UK makers via The Crown Agents and were much more solid affairs, and generally die stamped. As Altcar states, occasional examples of silver badges appear, again locally made but cast to a high standard and commissioned by Senior Officers.Badges,of various sizes with loops were collar dogs worn by Staff ( later Station) Sergeants, the Inspectorate and Gazetted Officers dependant on the uniform and season.
