Default Melbourne Continuation School Cadet Badge 1908-11

Some time back I picked up this brass badge on eBay after taking a punt it was a cadet badge. It was made by Stokes of Melbourne, measures 30mm (h) x 24mm (w), and has the initials MCS over the motto “Honour The Work”

I subsequently identified the badge as being from the Melbourne Continuation School which existed from 1905 to 1911, the name changed to Melbourne High School (MHS) in 1912.

The school historian at MHS who is also the custodian of their memorabilia collection has identified that:
• The badge was designed by the Art teacher, Walter McNicoll.
• There are three variants of the badge, one enamel, one bronze, and one brass. MHS has one brass and one bronze version of the badge in the school collection. The brass version was donated by Frank Heward, who was in the cadets of that era.
• The badge is from the 1908-11 period (apparently it replace another design)
• MHS believes the badge is a cadet badge though it cannot be confirmed for certain because none of the photos of the era held by the school can confirm it.

The photos I have been able to find only show the cadets wearing the Commonwealth Cadets hat badge.

Does anyone have any information or photos of the MCS cadets of that era that would assist in identifying if the badge was used by cadets.

Thanks in advance

Dennis

PS McNicoll joined the Victorian Militia in 1895, and in 1908 was the CO of the two Companies that formed schools contribution to the No. 3 Victorian Battalion of the Senior Cadets of the Commonwealth Military Cadet Corps.

He enlisted in the AIF on the day WW1 was declared in 1914 and was immediately commissioned. McNicoll lead the 6th Battalion as it landed at Gallipoli on the 25th of April, 1915 and was wounded at the Second Battle of Krithia. He returned to duty in in 1916 and lead the 10th Brigade for the next two years. By the end of WW1 he was a Brigadier General and had been awarded the CB, CMG, DSO, and MID (x4).

He was the administrator of the Mandated Territory of New Guinea from 1934 until the Japanese invasion in 1942. He was knighted for his work after the 1937 volcanic eruption which nearly destroyed Rabaul. At the end of his military and public service career he was Sir Walter Ramsay McNicoll, KBE, CB, CMG, DSO, VD and MID (x4)
