Default Rifle Brigade

This badge is not South African, the South Africa and the dates are battle honours for the 17th (Stepney and Poplar) Btn, The London Regiment.

As to whether this badge is an original I will let other members comment.

Official designation: 17th (County of London) Battalion, The London Regiment (Poplar and Stepney Rifles) (TF).

(Yes, a mouthful).

I lean toward reproduction on this one.
The Number font on the two, the dot in the zero, and loops.

But I will defer to London Regiment experts. Just my two cents.

Unfortunately, I too do not think this badge is good.

As there are a number of versions of this badge I would welcome any further info on points that show this badge to be a copy. I note the dot in the zero which is odd, the mentioned 2 is hard to spot and the other point mentioned is the lugs. Lugs are used more often on TF badges than regular badges, were they never used on this battalion badge?
Any futher guide points? Regards, Paul.

Hi Paul,

No expert at all but I did work for a year and a half putting together a London Regiment collection. The only placeholder badge I have in place is a 10th Paddington which is really hard to find.

It seems to me that I read on here somewhere that loops are a red flag on London regiment badges. Would love to know if that’s valid for all the battalions.

The best advice I have is get good quality images of known good badges and then start hunting. I came to this forum A LOT for advice and comparisons.

I also usually only buy badges from folks on this forum, ebay, and 4-5 sellers I trust. Been burned a couple times(ebay) but that’s part of the game. My wife lets me hang the reproductions on the Christmas tree.

HTH

Todd

I would think it would be blackened lugged London badges that are the main suspects for being fake. There are good lugged 5th and 8th London badges, I would still like to know some more 'tells' to show this badge is bad. Is the dot in the zero the main indicator? Regards, Paul.

Hello Todd. Thanks for the link. I have the bottom left with fault representing the battalion at the moment. I wish the title of this thread had London in it as I'm sure it would attract further comment on the original badge. Regards, Paul.

It seems that the OP (@cman) lost interest.

Got me interested though. I now see the thread title does mention London. Not sure if its been changed since posting.
There is one version of this badge that has a very strange top tablet, and one I regard as a fake that has the tablet set apart from the wreath. Regards, Paul.

Thanks Alan. Ebay is full of that type. Would you be able to comment further on the original post badge? Your view of points against it? Could be I've not noticed this type before. Regards, Paul.
