Unidentified Button
Hi everyone
This button was discovered underground in Nelson NZ while metal detecting. Im unsure if it is an early military button or not. It doesnt appear to be a nz rail button. Any help appreciated |

Hello
I had a quick look through Corbett's book on 'Regimental Badges of New Zealand' (which includes a section on buttons) and your button doesn't seem to be in there. From the photo, the initials do appear to be 'NZR' and it does look very much like a New Zealand Railways button but if you have discounted that then I'm not sure what it is. Is there any information on the back which might help date the button? I'm not 100% sure of the crown. It looks Victorian but sometimes photos can be deceptive. Roger |

Hi there,
I agree with Roger. It looks very much like the New Zealand Railways button. (The stylised script letters "NZR" intertwined and below a crown). I have attached a Kings Crown version of this button as a comparison. The button shown in the original post does look to be the earlier Victorian Crown version. Though the buttons looks to have been 'flattened' which may explain why the letters are not quite aligned. If not the New Zealand Railways - it will be very interesting to find out what it really is.
