Seaforths WW1 cap badge question
In this photo of Lt Gen Maxse presenting medals to men of the Seaforths in 1917:
https://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/army...-and-flanders/ which badge is the tall highlander in the middle wearing? It appears to be what I thought was an officer's version, but why would it be? I assume he is a member of the 6th Seaforths. |

Definitely the officer style badge but also worn by SNCO's. He doesn't appear to be a Staff Sgt as I can't see any stripes so he is most likely a Sgt Major, maybe CSM?

Great photo by the way, excellent to see the 4/5 Seaforths badge being worn.

Thanks, Alex, that might explain it. Yes, it's a great photo -- as you say, nice to see the 5th Seaforths badge and tartan on clear show.

Definitely an CSM, RSM etc. wearing the officer pattern badge. The tunic is the standard OR pattern, but usually senior NCOs would have a finer tailored tunic. Wartime expediency I suppose.

Cheers CB -- a senior NCO he is, then. Something else I've learnt thanks to the Forum!
