Hi Steve,

I couldn't view the images via the forum but my email notification did provide the link, I've saved those so hope OK to post direct here for them to display. Nice looking Type A & Type B officer's.
John

Hi Mike,

That's an impressive collection any Recce collector would love to have. Again Type A and Type B officer's, I wonder if the other Types are that much more unusual?

And that Indian Head - exceptionally rare badge since it must have been made as a trial by Gaunt, the design committee rejected it with these fairly harsh words 'We do not like the Indian's Head .. because it is foreign.' They also designed another Indian Head with the head alone above a scroll entitled 'Infantry Reconnaissance Corps', the designs being conceived before the Corps' name had been finalised. Gaunt's produced at least 6 designs other than that chosen and even Rex Whistler got in on the act providing selection of proposed designs. Any others actually manufactured for trial??

Many thanks for the information. I also like the reference to Indian Head design in Len Whittaker's notes via Ian's response (link to his album in post 4 of this thread). Len really was a trail blazer and an icon in the field of Commando and Special forces too. He was a great friend when I started collecting in those areas. Your own explanation regarding the Indian head design is fascinating, and your knowledge impressive - exactly the reason why I shared my images, and as always proving correspondence through the forum all adds to our collective understanding.
Regards and thanks
Mike

Really useful notes from Len Whittaker and mention of the Indian Head trial pattern, if you have an old copy of Military Illustrated 122 from the late nineties, there's an article 'Birth of a Cap Badge' by me with illustrations from the Public Record Office, as was, of the various designs put forward including the Indian Head.

For those of you who don't have access to Mil Il, these sketches have been on my albums since 2009.

The final image in your album is the Indian Head pattern which got to a trial die.
