Default Is this East surrey regiment supposed to be like this?

Hello forum,

Please could anyone on the forum tell me if this East Surrey Regiment badge is supposed to have this finnish on it or is it just in need of a good clean up.
I have took two sets of photos front and back in natural light and again with the flash.
Any views would be apprieciated.

Best regards Shane.

Default East Surrey

Shane,

I'm not an East Surrey collector but a quick look in Kipling & King, plate 1724, shows a blackened brass badge similar to yours was worn by 6 Bn, a TA unit.

The only other alternative I can suggest is if the brown colour is a wash, or painted on. If you can see brush marks or areas that have not been coated you may have an other ranks badge that has been converted for use as an officers' service dress badge. This was occasionally done as an expedient when officers couldn't get proper bronze OSD badges.

Stephen.

Putting it on a high contrast it appears to be a bi-metal? Have you tried a bit of brasso on the slider? ..... looks like its had years of fag smoke?

I wouldn't clean them as they have aged beautifully over the years.
