I do however think post #24 is completely pointless and in potentially poor taste.[/QUOTE]

Yes - that is the post that dismayed me too. If I was the lady in question, I would have been upset by that.
Lets keep it constructive please.
Personally, returning to the subject, I don't think the wing has anything to do with Force 136, my guess is something a lot rarer - but I am not an expert on wings. and stick to what I know if paying high prices.
Regards
Mike

I agree and hope either the poster himself or mods remove the comment.

I’d like to hear what you think it may be Mike if you have an incline?

Not being a SF collector I’ll admit I’d not heard of Force 136 prior to this thread so something rarer than that must be really very special? When venturing into such rarified territory I know how important provenance is and the seller’s description of ‘‘Unusual jump WW2 jump wings which I found locally about 20 years ago’’ whilst plausible is hardly four figure sum inspiring.

Hopefully we find out more.

Hello Luke
The general feel of the wing is much more Force 133 to me, therefore Mediterranean / Balkan to my mind. Admittedly there are many variants regarding Force 136 - but shape of wings, and canopy are not convincing to me in comparing Force 136 wings.
Regards
Mike

My thoughts were Albanian (ish) as I'm sure there's a similar wing in one of Jonathan Pittaways books.
Maybe LRDG Rhodesia.....ill have to look.
However at first glance i have to admit i thought 156 or similar.

I had no idea who "JDR" was until he was brought up in a post which resulted in this thread being 'sidetracked'.

I took the later comment to be a bit of harmless humour based on the photo in the profile (and not itended as a personal insult) , I wonder if there were similar comments when the photo was taken.

The suggestion that the comment should be 'moderated' confuses me , if it is because it is off topic then a lot of other posts fall into the same category . If it is deemed to be offensive/insulting then my sense of humour (squaddie/hospital) must be very different from that of some members.

The discussions/suggestions about the actual item are very interesting and informative .

Personally I don’t think the forum is a place for commenting on people’s mum’s, even if no insults are meant. If you do, well that’s up to you.

If you do not know JRD you will also not know he has threatened the admin and forum with legal action previously relating to personal comments which has resulted in the removal of entire threads. I would not like to see that happen here as the real topic is interesting.

OK , I did not know the "history" behind this and simply thought it was a harmless , humerous comment (and still do) , but if this person is seen as a threat to the forum perhaps it would have been a good idea not to introduce his name into this thread.

If the moderators are concerned about this thread they should remove all the comments/posts that do not relate to the topic under discussion.

Sorry but I must be missing something here. His alternative account in in the name of Corrine Roberts so what's the problem with the comment? It could be his mum's name, wife's, significant others, name ne likes to call himself at the weekend.......In today's climate he may have decided that he is now gay, bi, trans, gender neutral, LBTQI wobbly dot and hyphen as far as I know.

An interesting and informative thread Gents.

Completely agree that any collector can spend their money on whatever they like. I've been guilty, many times, of spending far too much on a wing and haven't regretted any of these purchases. That said, every member is free to comment on any sum spent and discuss the merits of the purchase. This is how we learn more about a piece and regarding the case in question try and determine what is special about it and why it commanded such a high price.

As to the wing that started this thread, I too believe one of the higher bidders must have some inside knowledge, most likely a photo, of the wing being worn by an SOE operative or similar type of specialist. Without this inside knowledge it seems like an extreme amount to the un-educated, myself included, and hopefully someone will find out what Unit the wing relates to and let us all know so we can all learn.

In summary, after reading the replies I don't believe it was two collectors putting crazy bids in at the same time, but that it's a wing to a special unit and two collectors had the knowledge and wanted it enough to spend a lot of money.

Attached is a photo of some other unusual wings including an early SAS wing

Good collecting

Paul

Nice images Paul - thanks for sharing. Wings are a huge subject in their own right. It is interesting to compare notes ... so much to learn, particularly regarding theatre made items etc.

Hi Jerry,

Unknown mate, but my guess is Force 136 as it is superbly made with fine silk threads often seen on wings from the Malay, Burma, Siam. Indo-China Theatre of operations.

They came with the two other wings.

Paul

With regards the prices paid for the wings, the buyer may have many reasons for buying them, if a dealer it may also be because he has someone who wants them who has even bigger pockets, something that is his own business.

On the flip side, I have a uniform to a moderately high ranking RAF officer (tunic, trousers, greatcoat, peaked cap and side cap) that came directly from his widow. He had a distinguished war record and post war service in the civil service. I'd put the value of the Lot at maybe £1000 or so. I have had a collector after it for about two years now, increasing his bids and offers, the last being £9500. Personally, having obtained it from the family and with the history, that doesn't tempt me. Money isn't everything...

As for my previous comment, I know nothing of the buyer or his mother and made an attempt to lighten the mood, based on the photo of one person at a table next to another in a costume, on what was becoming a rather distasteful personal thread. If people saw it as anything more than that, in the context of previous comments, that is up to them. The mods are free to remove it.
