Specific unit (AGRA?) vehicle markings, RA Tunisia & Italy
Hi all, the information here has been GREAT.
I have a project to build models of my Grandfather's artillery unit in Tunisia and Italy. I'd appreciate it if anyone can confirm - or not - what I have researched so far. Italy - 504 Battery, 75th (Highland) Heavy Regiment, Royal Artillery (7.2" Howitzer). Order of Battle: 8th Army --> XIII Corps --> 6 Army Group Royal Artillery (6 AGRA) (May 1944 - Sep 1944). Rgt marking is RA red/blue square, I believe with white bar UNDER (assigned to Army - appreciate it if someone could confirm please), and the Rgt marking number was, I believe, 204. Tunisia - 504 Battery, 140th (Field) Regiment, Royal Artillery (Jan-May 1943). (25 pdrs) Order of Battle: 1st Army --> V Corps --> 2 AGRA. Rgt marking number was, I understand, 202. Same question re the "white bar". Here's where I am unsure: I believe that the other marking on the vehicle should be that of who they came under direct command of. I have seen the 6 AGRA marking (Virgo zodiac symbol, like a gothic M, white on black) on uniforms - can I assume, this is the other marking that would have been on vehicles in Italy? Same question for Tunisia - should be the 2 AGRA symbol? And what was this? I have seen that it was the same as the 1st Army one (shield, george cross, sword); however I've also seen reference to 2 AGRA using the zodiac Taurus symbol. So which was it? I don't think it should be the Army or Corps markings, as they weren't directly under their command, but rather, AGRAs. Thanks! |
