Rangoon Port Defence Volunteers
Does anyone have any of the insignia worn by the Rangoon Port Defence Volunteers that they would be happy to post pictures of on the forum? I am struggling to find any examples anywhere on line so I guess that they must be scarce.
They seem to have had two distinct Companies which were, unsurprisingly, based in Rangoon. The Artillery Companies, note the plural, were raised on the 20th October 1879, with the motto, "Repose and Defence". The second Company was the Electrical Engineer Company, earlier (1906), referred to as the Electric Engineers Volunteer Company. The regiment, with both Companies, appears in the 1917 Army List but fails to warrant a mention in Cox's Military Badges of the British Empire 1914-18. Any information at all would be welcome. |

Apparently there had been a Naval Company as well.
The Rangoon Port Defence Volunteer Corps boasted Artillery, Naval and Electrical Engineering Units. The Rangoon Volunteer Artillery Corps had been raised in October 1879 and the Naval and Engineering Units in September 1892. (At this time a Fife Band was attached to the Rangoon Naval Volunteers Corps. To overview these three branches, the Rangoon Port Defence Volunteers Corps was formed as an Administrative Battalion by Sir Richard Carnac Temple in 1893. In April 1902 the engineering unit was restructured and divided into a submarine mining corps and an electrical engineering corps but the Corps was reorganised in May 1905 and, subsequently, only the electrical engineering corps continued. The Volunteer Artillery Corps had adopted the motto of "Repose and Defence" - which was later discarded. |

It started at £45 and had several bids after that, but I cant remember exactly.
I think the 'Ceylon' mis description helped it. regards

With many thanks to Tim (Chipper) for forwarding some illustrations of the various badges worn in British Burma; I now have what I needed.
