Corps of Commissionaires medal
Hopefully my 1st thread topic made its way to the right section.
I just received this today & was wondering if it is at all possible to determine who this was issued to (J. Renton), when, & if it is British or Canadian? I was intrigued by the appearance & even more by the fact it is named. Any & all help is appreciated. |

Looks like the German iron cross medal ribbon
S&W LTD might be Smith and Wright ( famous button makers in UK ) motto is work conquers all, and was use by The labour corps (uk) Last edited by norfolk regt man; 20-08-14 at 10:39 PM. |

Thanks Norfolk.
I saw that site when i was doing some research. The fact that it's Smith & Wesson, if it's the same S&W i'm familiar with & proudly own products from, make's it that much more interesting. |

Its a silver, 20 year service with good conduct medal, British issue as the Canadians have an entirely different design. The badge in NRM's picture is not a part of the medal clasp, its a seperate pin or sew on badge that accompanies the medal. The 15 year service medal is bronzed. I have a named and an unnamed silver medal and an unnamed bronze medal. You can contact Corps Security in London and they have an archive with which they will usually render assistance with research. Please have a look at my album http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...p?albumid=1638 and you will find examples of the sew on and pinned brooches as well as my medal examples. Yours is a lovely old medal and its a pleasure to see it posted, thank you
Regards, Phil

I took a moment to inquire with the CoC as to any information & received the following information:
[Admin Edit 16/5/16: Email contents removed at the request of the email originator] Will the succession number assist in any further information, or can anyone shed more light on this gentlemen's background? |

Hello,
No. 7 WO2, J.R. Renton served in the 1st Bn The Royal Highlanders (Black Watch) in WW1. He is entitled to a 1914 Star Trio with clasp and a MSM awarded 18.10.1916. This is probably your man. regards

Thank you very much Simon.
If I may ask how you are able to find that? If there is a database, be it subscription based or not, I'd like to be able utilize it myself in the future. |

I do have access to ancestry-dot.., just never thought to check there.
It is so much more rewarding when you can put a name to these historical treasures. Thank you again. |
