Hi IMO this is one of the newer fakes with the thick double folding tangs. I hate discussing details online because that is how they pick up on their mistakes and improve but it is what it is sorry.

Default If only I've found your forum earlier....

Hi guys,

I'm brand new around here... I'm from Montréal (Québec)...

And I found these CEF cap badges at the flea market this morning...

I guess it was too good to be true.

I left one behind... as it looked like it was casted in sand....

Let me have the bad news first doctor!!!

The pics are from my scanner...

The all have lugs. Which I understand is not a good thing.

If you need to see the backs, I'll manage to take pictures.

By the way, what's the value of a copy???

I am sorry they are all duds made about two years ago except one which may be fairly recent. I do not like to discuss reasons online as the fakers monitor these sights and pick up on their mistakes. But the old adage if it is to good to be true is most often is.

Hi Patrick, I hope you don't have much into those badges, as Paul says, they are repro. They appear to be the ones made by Dracks. They have been made recently, likely since 2004. Seconds of these were for sale at the last Ottawa show for $35 each.

Post Thanks all

Thanks to Paul & Bill.

I didn't spend too much... about 1/2 what they sold for at the show in Ottawa.

They are nice... I'll keep them as I won't be able to buy the real ones... on my salary!

Now... what percentage of Canadian Badges are Repros????

Does people fake WW2 cap badges also?

Hi Patrick, It is almost impossible to give a percentage of the badges that have been / are being repro'd. It is a significant number, but in comparison with the British badge collecting situation, Canada is still in good shape.
Many of the WW2 badges have been reproduced, and as their value increases, more will be reproduced. Fortunately, most of the WW2 era reproductions are either obviously copies, or the characteristics of the repros are well documented and the information can be used to identify the authentic from the fraudulent. Badges like the 1 CACR, the Canadian Parachute Corps, the Argyll Light Inf and Argyll Light Inf Tank, VIII Recce, Prince Rupert, Garrison Regiment, to name a few of the scarce ones, have all been copied, so education before acquiring is good practice.

Default CEF ARTY Badges

The images of the Battery Badges on this Forums Home page/CEF Badges are all of fakes also. I have had my badges "fairly "well confirmed as repro's (much to my disgust!!).
Mr Administrator - perhaps those images should be labeled a s "reproductions", it will prevent someone using them as a reference for the real thing.

PS I doubt that I will ever buy another Arty badge - maybe from Jamie or Ugene, but mostly I think I'll just stay away form that badge type.

Hi Larry, that's these two: 79th and 72nd. The Horse Artillery is ok?

Mike.

Default CEF Arty Badges

61st, 72nd and 79th Batttery badges are all at best "suspect" and more than likley "repros". I'll dig out the MG badge to check the makers plate on the reverse. the General Service Field Arty Badge (Maple Leaf/Cannon) is ok (I hope/ I think!!!)

ok, these three now marked as repro:

61st 72nd 79th

My sincere condolences to everyone caught up with these copies. I know the feeling well. Someone somewhere should be ... well I better not say, in case anyone of a nervous disposition is reading.

If someone could send me an Email pointing out what to check to ID repros... I'd appreciate very much.

I know you don't want to discuss it in the forums...

But I don't want to be caught again... and I feel that if I should ever find a genuine badge... it would be a shame if I left it behind by fear of buying a repro.

Thanks
