Brain Teaser - Royal Engineers Volunteers
JUST FOR A BIT OF FUN!
This seller openly sells reproduction items and clearly states this in the listings, but can you spot the deliberate(?) mistakes in this one; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Royal-Engi...item4d324194f9 Two very obvious ones spring to mind! Andy |

First glance on the way to l ook for stuff in the garage is the "I" at the end of "ENGINEERS". & "8" instead of "O" in the one word title scroll?

Is one error the upright of the ' R ' in ' EvR ' should have more of a curl ? and another perhaps is that it should have a slider, not lugs ??

Kevin and Steve,
thank you! Volunteers ceased c.1908 and their badges were generally in Wm (RE for certain), King George 5th came to the throne in 1910. So the badge on offer is the wrong metal with an incorrect cypher and still it has a bid on it Andy |

Perhaps someone wants a badge made of the wrong metal with the wrong cypher ???

Ah, thought of the cypher but for some reason got the 1908 /1910 mixed, thought it looked in brass not w/m......
Wise after the event, good job there wasn't money on it. |

Totally confused!!!!!
Having followed this thread, I am now at a loss having looked at K&K Vol 1 page 234, according to this book the Royal Engineers (Volunteers) can be found with the cypher of King George V in white metal, a version is shown in the book, number 882.
Now is this one of the mistakes in K&K or was such a badge worn? Remember badge collecting is never an exact science and we must never say never, the only rules are there are no rules . . ! Rob Last edited by Sonofacqms; 25-05-15 at 11:10 AM. |

Rob,
your reply sent me delving in to Vol 1 of K&K and you are correct it does show a GvR RE Vols in what appears to be Wm? Seems I was incorrect (?), when did the RE Volunteers cease? Was it different for the Corps, i.e. later than 1908? I have a standard pattern Wm GvR RE badge without (VOLUNTEERS) which may indicate they endured well past 1908? Andy |

Volunteers
Andy, the clue to this badge is the fact I think that the word "Volunteers" is in brackets which was after the volunteer movement was overtaken by the formation of the TF in 1908.
I believe several units today still have the word volunteers or a (V) included in their title. I have had one of these badges in my collection for many years with the GvR cypher and I have always been happy with it. As for white metal Royal Engineers cap badges, well I started a thread some long while back on "Walking out badges" and these may have been worn as such.
