Yes you're right they are both Petty Officer cap badges. The first badge is pre 1952, there is no way of dating precisely, I don't know the date this badge started to be used. The second Q/C badge is post 1952, the same badge is still in use now, I'm pretty sure.
There is a metal version of this badge worn on the beret, WRNS had the same but painted blue. Sorry I cant be more helpful. Phil Last edited by Phil2M; 19-07-11 at 08:02 PM. Reason: my bad grammar |

First badge 1902-53 ie. Kings Crown (After Victoria) and indeed the second Petty Officer's badge is post 1953 (Queens Crown)
There is indeed a metal equivalent badge worn on the beret. The WRNS (women) now wear exactly the same badges as the men. John |

Don't forget that until 1920 Petty Officers did not not wear a cap badge. Then, in that year, they adopted what had been the Chief Petty Officers cap badge. Chiefs adopted the badge they wear today - except obviously originally with a King's Crown.
So the King's Crown badge could be a Chief Petty Officer 1901-20 or a Petty Officer 1920-53. Looking at your picture I'm afraid that I don't think your badge looks old enough to be pre-1920 - but I could be wrong! Pete |
