Belgian The Rijkswacht Dutch or Gendarmerie French Cap.
A recent pick up probably dating to the 1970’s the The Rijkswacht Dutch or Gendarmerie French.
These guys were also the Kings Guard and were I am told prefers to the normal police to sort out issues “My father in law” A particularly nice cap showing little signs of wear just a little fading to the cockade. Attached link below. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gendarmerie_(Belgium) Regards Stephen |

Steve, This is a belgian Gendarmerie shako. I saw them being worn at the 1964 Worlds Fair in New York, and when it closed, I managed to get one of them.

Terry,
Correct but have different names depending. on the language spoken in the different parts of the country. Rijkswacht Is the name used by Flemish speakers in Flanders (Dutch) and French speakers in Wallonia call them Gendarmerie. Do you still have your cap Regards Steve |

Worked a policing operation in Belgium during the 2006 World Cup in Germany and was deployed up in the Dutch part of the country. I only knew pigeon French and didn’t get the regional differences at that moment. So there I was walk round a football stadium with my Belgian Liaison Officer going through numerous security gates thanking everyone opening them for me in French, until he pointed out that instead of being polite I was actually p***ing everyone off!
Cheers……John Last edited by Skippy; 07-10-23 at 08:26 PM. Reason: Correction |

Steve, No longer have it. I had in back in the mid '60s and traded it a good while ago. I have a picture of it somewhere and will try to find it and post it.

Hi Stephen,
I thought I had one of these collecting dust in the back bedroom somewhere. Not quite the same, mine seems to have red piping around the crown and gold braid on the central cockade. I’m not sure why? I seem to remember buying it quite a long time ago thinking how attractive it looked. I hope this helps? Zob. |
