Hi,
This is "The New Zealand Regiment", formed in 1947. Looking at Oldham's book, it was reorganised into the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regt in 1964, so I assume it dates sometime from post 1953 and pre 1964? For ref, it is Oldham #6/168, although he does not show a picture of it. It also came in guilt, silver wash and enamel. Oldham has it worth €10, but his book was from 2011. I am no expert in Kiwi badges, but I am sure others will be along to give you more/better info cheers, Tim |

Second Battalion
On the 1st April 1964 the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment was formed at Terandak Barracks, where they had been since the end of the Emergency. The new motto adopted was Onward however the motto of the NZ Regiment-Kura Takahi Puni (We are ready) is continued today with 2/1 Battalion Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment. (2/1 RNZIR was renamed in 1973, from the 2nd Battalion NZ Regiment which had became based in Burnham christchurch in order to train replacements for the battalion in Malaya. The 1st Battalion Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment remained in SE Asia until 1989.

The 1947 re-organisation of NZ Battalions into Regiments can be confusing as the 2nd New Zealand Regiment was raised before the 1st New Zealand Regiment.
The intention was to raise several New Zealand Regiments from occupation troops, but it was decided that should a Regular Regiment be raised in New Zealand the 1st New Zealand Regiment title would be held in abeyance for that purpose. The 2nd New Zealand Regiment was raised from troops of the 22nd Battalion in February 1947 and disbanded in September 1948. The 3rd New Zealand Regiment was raised from troops of the 27th Battalion in February 1947 and was also disbanded in September 1948. It is my understanding official authority wasn’t granted until the 2nd August 1957 to raise and train the first Regular Infantry Battalion in New Zealand history for service in Malaya, the Battalion under the command of Lieut-Colonel W. R. K. Morrison DSO was known as the 1st New Zealand Regiment. |

Royal NZ Infantry Corps New Zealand Regiment
Although first approved in 1954, it wasn't until 1961 these cloth shoulder titles were produced. The Royal NZ Infantry Corps New Zealand Regiment title was made but apparently not issued. Also pictured, the postwar NZ Territorial Infantry Battalions on the left, North Island & on the right South Island battalions. All white lettering on post office red with paper backing.

If you Google Military Memorabilia Ltd, which is a New Zealand site go to infantry badges and scroll down to the end you will find brass KC badges facing both left and right for $15.00 and a QEC Silver Gilt and Enamel officers badge for $35.00.
Good luck Phil. |

Guy's,
Just a quick one to show some New Zealand Regiment badge variation from rather hot France. First Pic - top-row shows the Kings Crown Officers Pat and then EM's - bottom-row shows the badges Brent & Anjoucollector have already shown. Second Pic - Top set shows the gilt fired version. I always thought these were collars, but a couple of years back I picked up the top center badge, which has extra long lugs as if it is meant to be a Cap, compared to the other two. - bottom center - a Stirling Silver Sweethearts badge in the same size. Third Pic - nicknamed the 'rough strike' set. Forth to Sixth - show the famous ski cap with a well worn NZR Cap badge. All the best James |

Hi, nice cap however as these caps were not in use until after 1957 this should have a QC anodised badge.Unless there were old badge stock still in use after the change of throne, or a veteran had added later.
