Default 1st. V.B. South Lancs Regiment mess chair

Thanks to Mike B, I learnt about this chair last week and finally convinced myself that as the 1st South Lancs Volunteer Battalion when it became the 4th T.F. battalion and which , according to Westlake (The Territorial Battalions ) ,served with the 55th West Lancashire Division, I could just about justify adding it to my collection.

The chair I presume would have been one of a number made for one of the Messes at the Headquarters of the Battalion and has a nicely executed crest in gold leaf on the back of the chair. Another nice touch is a small makers plate on the bottom of the chair showing that it was made by a local ( Warrington ) maker.

Whilst the odd regimentally marked items such as cutlery and crockery do turn up from time to time, I often wonder what happened to the hundreds of items that must have been in the messes of Territorial Drill Halls throughout the Country when they closed.

P.B.

Nice chair.

When Messes and the like close the furniture etc are either sent to the RHQ, museum, successor regts or divided up amongst the membership - often by auction.

Anything that has been presented by an individual has to be offered back to them before it is disposed of if it is not claimed. Routine items such as cutlery etc are often sold off in public auction.

There is an MOD silver collection made up of pieces from long gone regiments which items can be borrowed from by existing units on a long-loan basis. Southamtom UOTC used to have a 1900 Hong Kong silver rowing cup!

Apologies for my earlier error, the 1st V.B. South Lancashire Regiment became the 4th Territorial Battalion and not the 5th as I originally stated.

Hi Peter,

Well done indeed.

Always great to see something rather unusual like this turn up.

A great addition.

Cheers,

Roy.

A lovely bit of kit and unusual. It does make you wonder where did all the rest of such end up. I would assume those in poor condition end up on the tip at the time when such were perhaps not so desirable as they are today. I have some mess cutlery and even that does not turn up too often.
