WWI trench art
In a similar vein to the 'favorite WWI medals' thread, a trench art thread might be interesting too. Here's an ashtray with a Prussian plate affixed...

Trench art
Whilst I have a small collection of trench art, I feel unless it is as your ashtray and features a badge of either the British or Commonwealth forces or other allied insignia it does not really have a place on this forum.
Only an opinion, but this is all about badges not other items of militaria. Rob |

If the trench art features British or Commonwealth forces I would like to see a thread started.

I could put some RM trench art in
I was going to show a match box cover that was brought back by US forces until the german badge thing was brought up as it has the centre of a WW1 german buckle I presume this was made by allied forces. Regards Irv |

Trench art
I have somewhere the start of a cigarette lighter made from two ASC cap badges that was left unfinished, an ashtray with a Suffolk cap badge soldered on.

I have a couple of these type of matchbox covers in my collection - post war, manufactured by the French as souvenirs for returning Allied soldiers.

I always thought it was OK to post such items as long as they were posted down here out of the way of the main British & Commonwealth badge sections.
I have a few items that would be classed as trench art.

The sentiment concerning foreign badges and other militaria had been raised and dealt with some time back. In fact, the Forum is not exclusive to British & Commonwealth badges and has catered for collectors of the above-mentioned offshoots, which I consider healthy.
Case in point: I have no compunction in displaying Boer militaria among Victorian collectibles of the South African War; nor WW1 Turkish militaria alongside British mementoes of the Gallipoli campaign; nor, for that matter, Imperial German items along with British Great War badges, etc. For some reason(s) I draw a line with Nazi collectibles alongside WW2 displays, but not necessarily with Italian- could be on account of fraudulence as well as ideological. So what do we think? Are WW1 trench art with German badges on OK?

As per my reasoning, I see no difficulty. Most probably the trench art would have been the creation of a Tommy utilising a captured badge or other trophy.

This shell case is German though the art work is British.

Sorry Rob but I personally couldn't disagree more with you, I think it's great that people wish to show things in their collections that may be of some interest to others and don't see why they should be put off in doing so by kill joys to put it politely. |
