Chris,
it puports to be from 1898 - 1905 period but I believe its a modern fake. Lack of detail to the rear and footed lugs. regards

I think that the intention is to deceive very deliberately, but, it certainly does fail in that.

The original first generation of these cap badges tend to have a number of holes to their reverse, as shown, four in this case and the material used in their manufacture, along with the strikes, was very good, my examples all came from South Africa and date from the Anglo Boer War.
